Crafting Advocateonline: Product Design for a Business Legal Services Platform
Overview
Advocateonline is a SaaS platform created to simplify access to essential legal resources for businesses.
The project evolved in two major phases: the MVP and Version 1.0.
Goal
To build a database of legal documents, constantly updated in accordance with changing legislation, that enable businesses to handle legal needs independently online.
Challenges
01
Making the platform intuitive for non-expert users is crucial.
02
Ensuring robust security for sensitive legal data.
03
Encouraging small businesses to adopt and trust a new digital platform.
04
Limited resources demand focus on essential functions for early value delivery.
//PROCESS
1st PHASE: MVP
01
RESEARCH
Gathering Insights from Lawyers:
- Conducted in-depth discussions with the legal team to understand how users typically work with legal documents.
- Identified common workflows, such as «Obtaining a License» or «Preparing for Inspections.»
Competitor Analysis:
Analyzed similar platforms in the market to learn best practices for presenting legal content.
Did you know? Many small businesses spend up to 20% of their budget on legal services, often because they lack access to simplified resources tailored to their needs.
02
IDEATE
Created mind maps to visually break down the legal content into logical sections, this helped clarify the relationships between different types of documents and provided a foundation for the portal’s navigation.
//WIREFRAMES
03
WIREFRAMES
- Designed the structure around a central catalog of documents, accessible through clear categories.
- Proposed a simple homepage with links to the catalog and key tools to make navigation intuitive.
- Developed an early visual style to balance professionalism with simplicity, ensuring the portal felt approachable yet authoritative.
04
PROTOTYPE
The initial wireframes had established the layout and content structure, but the interaction flow and usability needed to be visualized. Additionally, stakeholders needed a functional prototype to provide feedback before moving into full development.
OUTCOMES
- Designed an interactive prototype showcasing the catalog, form-filling, and saving features.
- Simulated user flows like document selection, filtering, and navigation.
- Iterated based on stakeholder feedback, addressing multi-level navigation and unclear labels.

Results
01
Validation of Core Concept
The platform proved its potential by providing access to legal templates and tools, demonstrating a demand for a centralized legal document system.
02
Key User Insights
- Confusion in Catalog Navigation: Users didn’t understand how to use the document catalog. They struggled to identify what documents were included, how to select them, and where to start.
- The value proposition wasn’t immediately apparent, leading to low initial engagement.
- The pricing model was seen as too rigid and expensive, prompting discussions on subscription-based options.
03
Prioritized Improvements for Version 2.0
- To introduce better navigation to guide users to relevant documents.
- To shift focus toward developing the personal account for document storage, notifications, and personalization.
- To enhance navigation and introduce dynamic forms to address user pain points.
- Introduction of new features, such as filling out documents online
